This two-sided poster encapsulates Letter 21 from the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, asking for support from Frederick Douglass to help fix his reputation in his hometown after a visit to Chicago. The dark and messy background illustrates the troubles that Dunbar was going through—and the struggles of an African-American man in the early 1900s. Paired with it, the bright and calming opposite side illustrates the calm, content, and put-together persona that he presented himself as to society, helping him continue to succeed as an oppressed African-American man. This work was in two exhibitions, one at the Dayton Metro Library and the other at The Hub in downtown Dayton, OH.
